Wash. U. Takes It’s Third Team NCAA Title This Year

By Johann Qua Hiansen on May 15th, 2008

It was a race to the finish with the Bears up 4-3 against Emory. Men’s tennis was competing in Lewiston Maine for the program’s first national title. In doubles action, juniors Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland prevailed at the No.1 slot while junior Nirmal Choradia and sophomore John Watts prevailed at No.2 doubles. Freshman Isaac Stein won his No.6 singles in straight sets while Hoeland bounced back to win the last two sets in No.5 singles.

The defining moment in the battle to be the first team to get to five points came down to sophomore Danny Levy.

Sophomore Danny Levy was locked in a heated battle against Emory’s David Caplan in the No. 3 singles spot while junior Charlie Cutler was down in the No. 2 spot against Emory’s Mark Boren.

Both matches were into their final sets after both Emory players took the first and both Wash. U. players won the second. Cutler was down 5-3 while Levy had a slight edge at 6-5. Either game could have spelled victory for Wash. U. but it was Levy who scored the national championship winning point with a 7-5 win.

That’s the third team national championship for Washington University with volleyball and men’s basketball taking home the title this school year. This year we also had senior Morgen Leonard Fleckman taking home the NCAA Indoor National Pole Vaulting championship and sophomore John Watts winning the ITA National Championship.

It’s never been a better time to be a Bear fan with several other teams pulling in program bests and Wash. U. riding the top spot in the Director’s Cup Standings. The latest standings will be out on May 22.

Second Annual Varsity Talent Show

By Johann Qua Hiansen on April 6th, 2008

The Athletics Complex was packed with athletes as they filled the stands of the Field House at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Eight teams competed with the defending champion men’s basketball team starting the night off. Most of the participants involved were freshmen.

The night was filled with talent, shenanigans and lots of laughs. Each group was judged according to creativity and talent on a scale of 1 to 10. In the judges chairs were assistant Cross Country Coach Paul Thornton, assistant volleyball coach Paula Urbanek, and assistant women’s basketball coach Bobbi Morse.

The judges took their inspiration from American Idol judges. Urbanek was generally upbeat and generous as she followed Paula Abdul while Morse told contestants straight up if they were good or not using inspiration from Simon Cowell. Thornton threw in a few ‘Dawgs’ in his comments as he played homage to Randy Jackson.

The men’s basketball team took fourth place overall with their medley of an Irish jig, a tribute to the Oompa Loompa song from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a rousing rendition of Queen’s We are the Champions.

The men’s soccer team scored 54.5 points after their dance number impressed all those in the gym. Senior Onyi Okoroafor got the crowd jumping with his hot pink ensemble and wacky wig. One of the men’s soccer players brought one of the women’s soccer players onto the gym floor to join the act. The team tied with the women’s basketball team after a tie breaking dance off failed to break the deadlock.

The men’s swimming and diving team had a good performance of MC Hammer’s ‘Can’t Touch This’ generating cheers from the women’s swimming and diving team who created a poster to support them.
Three freshmen of the volleyball team tried to pay homage to their experience filling up water bottles and serving as slaves with an original song sung to the tune of ‘God bless the U.S.A’. One was dressed as Winnie the Pooh while another was dressed as genie. The Lady Bears were commended for their effort but were ripped to shreds by the judges.

The men’s cross country team suffered the same fate as the volleyball team as their dance act failed to
impress the judges. The Red and Green were one of the ‘boy band’ acts of the night.

The baseball team paid tribute to the Bears with the mascot making an appearance. The Bear threw out some free T-shirts into the crowd as five baseball players dressed in their red baseball sweaters watched eight teammates perform for the crowd. The players that actually danced generated a lot of excitement with the crowd as they sang Sweet Caroline.

The baseball team also seemed to have a country theme going as several guys rode their teammates like horses in one song. The ladies in the audience were thrilled when several members of the baseball team took off their shirts to show off their muscles but the judges weren’t exactly thrilled. The team did score well enough to come in fourth.

The women’s basketball team also scored 54.5 points. This act began with freshman Jenny Lloyd playing her guitar and singing a heartwarming song. Her teammates then followed up with some percussion music generated by dribbling balls. Freshman Moji Hassan then began a rap that paid homage to the championship history of Wash. U. The Lady Bears culminated the act with two upperclassmen doing a dance number.

Women’s soccer ended the night with freshmen performing dance moves and music from boy bands N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. The act was torched by Morse who in Simon Cowell fashion gave it a 5 total. The other judges were much nicer giving at least double that score.

The entire talent show was emceed by juniors Sean Wallis and Tyler Nading of the men’s basketball team who announced that a tiebreaker would be held between the men’s soccer team and women’s soccer team. The winner would be determined by audience noise. But the 30 second dance off between two contestants failed to break the deadlock and it was announced that the teams would split the prize money and the glory this year.
